Culture for Kids: Raising Global Citizens
We live in a culturally-diverse area, where heritage and differences are honored and valued, but how do we make the most out of what we have? Integrating language and culture into our children’s lives helps them connect to others both in their own community and also in the greater world.
Sponge, which offers foreign language classes for young children, hosted a panel discussion in May where local experts shared their thoughts on a topic they are passionate about—culture for kids. So, as a parent, what can you do?
Click here for some of the panelists' tips.

Eye Can Art's brush with fame
I was in Butte Montana with my family for the 4th of July, and learned that Senator Barack Obama and his family were going to be there for the holiday as well. I also learned it was his oldest daughter’s birthday, and thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to give her an Eye Can Art kit or two.
Not surprisingly I guess, giving the Obamas a gift is a difficult task. At a 4th of July picnic for the candidate, the Eye Can Art kits I was toting along made it through a metal detector, a hand-off to a family friend in the local political scene, two secret service unpackings and re- packings, and a sniff test before eventually making their way toward the Obamas travel bus. We hope they made it onto the bus, and that the Obama girls got a chance to enjoy the kits.
Oh, we also wanted to mention that two of our kits recently won Parents' Choice awards in their "Toy" category!

Spun announces the launch of its newly-designed website
Sara Seumae, Spun's creator and designer, collaborated with Seattle-based Elephants & Ants for the re-design of the site. ChooseSpun.com beautifully displays photos of the clothing line's current collection which proves that even a mother of two, with no fashion-design experience, can create wearable pieces for every woman.
Seumae's journey began in early 2007 shortly after the birth of her second daughter. While she and her family had already begun making "green" changes in their diets and daily life practices; it only seemed logical to take the next step in to their closets. Not prepared to make any concessions when it came to her personal style, Seumae started to research quality, fashionable organic clothing that would stay within her family's budget. Unable to find what she was looking for, and with a little inspiration from her father, Seumae realized that only she could fill her "green" fashion need.
For the full story about Spun, please log on to www.ChooseSpun.com, and stay tuned for Spun's Fall/Winter 2008 collection.
Never Carry a Doggy Bag Again! Do Your Kaka Duty with Kakaduty!
The inspiration for Kakaduty Leashes came to Lynn Kern while out walking her
dog, Maggie, one morning. She had been in the habit of using an old clothespin
to attach Maggie's full "doggy bags" to her leash, and on this particular
morning it seemed that every dog walker she met was carrying their bags! The
idea for her invention came to her in a flash. She calls it her "epoopany".
Kakaduty leashes feature velcro-lined "wings" which securely hold full bags of
dog "kaka". You simply lift the wings, drape the bag around, then snugly fasten
the wings back down. The bag-holder is 18" up from where the leash attaches to
the dog's collar, which should give plenty of room for most any bag. Kakaduty
leashes are available in two sizes and a variety of colors. The leashes are
made in the USA of polypropylene, which will not stretch or fade should the
leashes get wet. Fifty cents from each purchase will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Lynn would like to offer free shipping of her leashes to all members of NWEM. Please see her
website at www.kakadutyleashes.com or call 206-755-2024 to order.
Remember, be a responsible dog owner and do your kaka duty with Kakaduty Leashes!
