NWEM Mamapreneur of the Month: Deb Grover, BellySock LLC
About your business
BellySock: A hip and functional maternity, nursing and "muffin
top" solution.
Why did you start your business?
I was pregnant with my first born and frustrated over the cost
and fit of maternity clothes so I came up with my own solution to
the problem: BellySock.
What is the best thing about being a mamapreneur?
I love the mamapreneur community. I am an MBA candidate as well
and hear a lot of talk about the "business world". Prior to starting
BellySock, I was a bit intimidated by the "suit" mentality. But with
the emerging mamapreneur network and community, it is a totally
different story. We are educated, innovative and giving. We are
women that help each other be successful. I love it. I have learned
so much from my fellow mamapreneurs. I also love the flexibility my
job allows. My family is the most important thing in the world to
me. I am able to be with my kids (Ryleigh- 2.5 years and Mayah- 16
months) and husband (Scott) and make the business flex to my
dueling roles as mommy, wife, student and mamapreneur.
What are your personal goals for your business?
Grow, grow, grow! I think this is the goal of anyone in business
within a market that is only growing. I also have the goal of
keeping focused on what is important which is giving back. While I
expect to reap the benefits of my labor, I also want my community to
gain from my work. BellySock needs to be thoughtful in all of its
actions. This includes participating in breastfeeding, prenatal and
green causes through product giveaway sponsorship, and of course,
our profit sharing donations. I truly believe in karmic circles.
What I put out there comes back to reward me. This goes with
supporting my community.
Advice for moms who are in business or are looking to
start a business:
Believe in yourself. It is ok to let the laundry or the dishes
sit for a bit. Remember your priorities in life.
